Double Dykes

Works were carried out on the Levenmouth Reconnect Project to inform design and the development of rewilding plans.

THE PROJECT

The Levenmouth Reconnect Project was a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving transport links, social outcomes, and economic opportunities in the Levenmouth area of Fife, Scotland.

The project primarily focused on the re-establishment of a rail connection to Leven, a town that had been without direct rail services since the closure of its station in 1969. Story Contracting acted as Principal contractor for the safe delivery of the project and the other contractors working on the project.

In order submit a rewilding plan to SEPA for approval, the original Pway material had been stockpiled and a volume of this was required so as to inform the design.

Story drones used photogrammetry techniques to provide a fast and accurate 3D model generated from overlapping images which were processed to create a colourised point cloud, which was aligned to OSGB36 using a number of ground control points. Once the data was processed the 3D model generated georeferenced orthophotos, contour maps and digital elevation models, with our Propeller software then used to calculate the volumes.

The use of Story Drones not only allowed all data collection and processing to be complete within 24 hours, but also greatly reduced the risk of the works by removing the need for personnel to be put in danger by scaling the stockpiles.
