Working alongside Network Rail and North Lanarkshire Council to install the award-winning new underbridge under the West Coast Main Line.
As part of the Ravenscraig Masterplan Development, a new underbridge UB031/013B is required to cross the West Coast Main Line (WCML). As part of these works, an adjacent existing underbridge (UB031/014) is to be infilled. The Ravenscraig Masterplan Development is a package of infrastructure and investment to be delivered by North Lanarkshire Council (NLC), which enables and supports the development and regeneration of Ravenscraig which is an area near Motherwell, Scotland.
The project commenced in May 2022 and the team have worked around the clock on night and weekend shifts to construct the bridge. The concrete structure was constructed offline by the team and then moved into place by a Self-propelled modular transporter during a 9-day blockade over Easter of 2023.

The project involved the following main phases:
• De-vegetation of all work areas
• Create access road from enterprise way to compound area
• Create compound area & set up compound
• Create access road to laydown area & casting yard
• Create laydown area & casting yard

• Staged casting of new bridge structure
• Partial demolition and full infill of adjacent UB 031/014

To help us deliver this monumental scheme, we heavily relied on our specialist supply chain partners from an early stage at tender. There are many to mention, but our main specialist supply chain partner would be Sarens, who were responsible to transporting the 5000T structure into position using Self Propelled Modular Transporters.
Throughout the duration of the project, the team have delivered a number of meaningful social value initiatives within the local area as part of our Community Benefits commitments with North Lanarkshire Council. This has included working closely with Developing the Young Workforce to deliver industry taster days and over 400-hours of work experience on the live construction site, created a bespoke training programme and delivered 100 hours of work experience.

VolkerRail/Story joint venture were tasked with the £80m project as part of a £137m investment that saw the undertaking of extensive enhancement works to remove several bottlenecks along the route to improve reliability, increase passenger services and aid in freight movements.
