Burton Underpass
Ayrshire Roads Alliance
Essential works took place to replace the unsafe road crossing over Dunure Road by reopening a former railway tunnel as a new underpass.
15,000t
of excavated material reused
395m
of bridges installed
The scope of the project was to design and implement the following works:
• Duniface Bridge: A 150m long multi – span bridge crossing the River Leven and newly reinstated railway
• Methilhill Bridge: A 130m long multi – span bridge with a single 60m span over the River Leven, providing access to Cameronbridge station for the Methilhill community
• Mountfleurie bridge: A 102m long multi-span bridge connecting Leven and Methill together over the newly reinstated railway
• Active Travel Road: Forming of the new 1.2km of active travel road around Cameronbridge Station, including street lighting and 2no toucan crossings over the A915
• Footpath Alterations: Modifications to the existing footpaths around Leven Station , including new parapets on the existing sea wall, an extension to the parapet on the Bawbee Bridge, and installation of three toucan crossings
During the design & delivery stages of our project, we identified and implemented the following value engineering and effciency ideas:
• Reuse of 15000 ton of spoil generated from the track excavation within embankment for the cycle paths under paragraph 19 from SEPA.
• Worked with Fife Council to ensure that their follow – on projects linked with the active travel network being designed by Network Rail. This resulted in 150m of duplicated paths being removed from scope resulting in a 95k saving.
Our site team partnered with Methilhill Community Childrens Inititaive to create a new sensory garden, designed as a space for learning, play, and growth, contributed to by over 100 hours of volunteering. The team carefully designed and built a space that stimulates all five senses, featuring a bug hotel, sensory boards, and edible fruit plants.
An opening ceremony was held to celebrate the completion of the garden, with the children participating in adding the finishing touches.
