Broxburn BESS
Story was responsible for the civil and structural elements of the Broxburn BESS Project, operating as a subcontractor under Ethical Power.
The Project
The site was initially a greenfield location adjacent to an existing poultry farm near the Broxburn substation, situated northeast of the site. A new 33 kV metering
substation was installed within the site to facilitate this connection.
Story was responsible for the civil and structural elements of the Broxburn BESS Project, operating as a subcontractor under Ethical Power. As this was the Story team’s first involvement in a BESS project, we had to take a forward-thinking approach to unfamiliar interfaces. The challenge was further compounded by the design arriving in a non-sequential order, but we successfully adapted by maintaining close collaboration with other subcontractors.
We engaged early with the fencing subcontractor, recognising the long lead times for material orders. The client imposed particularly stringent requirements on all temporary works (TW), so we maintained a rigorous approach to TW design and thorough checks for all aspects related to reinforced concrete formwork. The overall construction process was relatively straightforward, however, the interface between precast trough units and battery foundations required particular attention to ensure proper alignment.

The Scope
The scope of the project was to implement the following works:
• Earthworks: Comprehensive earthworks to prepare the site.
• Site Access Roads: Construction of access roads for efficient site navigation.
• Security and Lighting Installation: Implementation of security measures and lighting systems.
• Placement of Precast Units: Strategic placement of precast units for structural integrity.
• Foundation Construction: Building additional foundations around the MV skid perimeter.
• Substation Drainage: Installation of effective drainage systems for the substation.
• Underground Ducting: Laying underground ducting for utility connections.
• 33 kV Cable Route Installation: Establishing the 33 kV cable route for grid connection.
Value Engineering
• The use of recycled aggregates for bulk fill materials allowed for a cost benefit of 33k.
• The Story team transported timber formwork panels to Cathkin for re-use along with utilising the same supply chain for Cathkin improvement works.
• The team hosted a live lessons learned session between the Broxburn BESS & Cathkin BESS teams to discuss ways of improvement.
