The project involved regrading approximately 280 metres of the embankment to enhance structural stability and improve rail safety.
The Seaton South embankment supports the twin-track GSM1 line at the northern end of the iconic Harringworth (Welland) Viaduct, located just east of the villages of Seaton and Harringworth in Northamptonshire. Due to long-standing instability along the embankment, train speeds on this section of the GSM1 line had been restricted to 20 mph, impacting efficiency and reliability.
To address this, the project focused on regrading approximately 280 metres of the embankment to improve structural stability and enhance rail safety. Works included installing stone to reduce the slope angle and provide robust support for the railway infrastructure.

The scheme presented several challenges, including strict landowner agreements and a compressed delivery timeframe. In addition to regrading the embankment, the scope was expanded to include the construction of a new access track for the landowner and the installation of new fencing along the affected area.
Success was achieved through early engagement with the landowner, which helped foster positive community relations. The team also sourced stone strategically from local quarries, securing competitive rates that exceeded expectations. Furthermore, proactive management of unforeseen changes ensured the project was completed on time despite additional works being introduced.
Collaboration was the cornerstone of this project, driving its success from start to finish. From the outset, the team established a strong partnership with both the designer and the landowner, ensuring that every stage of the scheme was underpinned by open and transparent communication. Regular updates, clear explanations of the works, and a willingness to listen to feedback created a positive and cooperative environment.
