The project involved regrading approximately 280 metres of the embankment to enhance structural stability and improve rail safety.
The Seaton South embankment supports the twin-track GSM1 line at the northern end of the Harringworth (Welland) Viaduct, situated immediately east of the villages of Seaton and Harringworth in Northamptonshire. Due to instability along the embankment, train speeds on this section of the GSM1 line are currently restricted to 20 mph.
This project involved regrading approximately 280 metres of the embankment to enhance structural stability and improve rail safety. The works included the installation of stone to reduce the slope angle and provide sufficient support to the railway infrastructure.
The project presented several challenges, including strict landowner agreements and a constrained delivery timeframe. In addition to the embankment regrade, the scope also included the construction of a new access track for the landowner and the installation of new fencing along the affected area.

The scope of the project was to design and implement the following works:
• Excavate and step the existing embankment face in 10m sections.
• Installation of Terram to the excavated sections.
• Installation of stone to the embankment face, decreasing the slope angle.
• Installation of safe cess walkway.
• Installation of drainage to the toe of the embankment.
• Install new access track, install new fence lines and reinstate the landowners land.
The project successfully demonstrated best practice across several key areas:
• Early engagement with the landowner, fostering positive community relations.
• Strategic sourcing from local quarries, securing better-than-expected rates for stone.
• Proactive management of unforeseen changes, ensuring timely completion despite additional works
The project team maintained close collaboration with both the designer and the landowner throughout the duration of the scheme. Ongoing and transparent
communication with the landowner ensured a clear and consistent dialogue, allowing any concerns or issues to be identified and resolved promptly. This proactive approach helped to mitigate potential delays.
