Story carried out works to complete the construction of Lakes College’s purpose-built civil engineering training centre at their campus in Lillyhall, Workington.
Story Contracting were engaged by Lakes College to complete the construction of their new, purpose-built civil engineering training centre at their campus in Lillyhall, Workington. The project was funded by investment from the Department for Education, Cumbria LEP’s Growth Deal fund and the college.
The completed training centre, based on a 10-acre site, comprises a classroom block and steel framed building including all associated carparking, drainage, lighting and fencing. The buildings will be used to offer a comprehensive range of vocational training, education and skills in heavy construction disciplines.
A remote concrete training area and dig zone caters for heavy civils training covering excavator operation, deep drainage and earthwork support.

Throughout the project we engaged with Lakes College and students from local schools to provide work experience opportunities as part of our commitment to inspiring the next generation of talent in the industry. This included our bespoke virtual work experience programme which enabled students to gain valuable experience despite the challenges of the COVID pandemic.
This work experience programme also included 14 students attending a socially-distanced site visit at Lakes College, with further students also attending site later on in the project.
The project team worked in close collaboration with the architect and structural designers to resolve ongoing issues which arose throughout duration of the project. Maintaining this collaborative relationship enabled us to quickly implement practical solutions to keep the works moving and without impacting the final project outcome.
Our team also worked through numerous methodologies for the site’s new culverts, enabling approval to be quickly received from the Environment Agency.
BAE Systems
Story Contracting were contracted by BAE Systems to carry out the project which was a mixture of civils and building works to prepare the site for the new University of Cumbria facility.
Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO)
Story Contracting were contracted by Landmarc to carry out the project to construct a new 1214m2 industrial style training building for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) within the Catterick MOD base.
Holmen Iggesund
In 2021 Story were appointed to assist the design team to produce the most efficient construction sequence to carry out the construction of a new Effluent Treatment Plant at the Iggesund factory in Workington, Cumbria.
