Story Contracting’s Construction division was contracted to develop a £11m opacification plant for Innovia Security in Wigton, Cumbria.
Innovia factory in Wigton has been a leading global producer of high performance films in Wigton since October 2004, and has been commissioned by the Bank of England to play a vital role in the production of Guardian® Polymer bank notes.
These £5, £10 and £20 bank notes will be distributed across 24 countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom.
In 2014, Story Contracting began work to build and develop the £11m Opacification plant for Innovia Security in Wigton, Cumbria.

The main work phases for this project included:
• Site clearance
• Permanent access routes from the adjacent factory site
• Bulk earthworks including construction of flood preservation swale
• Ground stabilisation and vibro piling
• Drainage including attenuation and outfall control
• Steelwork and cladding for the new factory structure
• Full factory and office build works
• External works including concrete aprons, access roads and footways, plus soft and hard landscaping
The high security demands surrounding this project created challenges, but these did not prevent our team from completing the project on schedule and to a very high standard. Although this is the largest project Story Contracting has won to date, our team adapted to these changes to provide an end result impressing both Innovia and the Bank of England.
We were commissioned to build and develop the £11m opacification plant. The project was initially due to take 12 months to complete, however an immense amount of additional instructed works and some service diversions led to a six-week extension and saw the project value increase from £8m to more than £11m.
BAE Systems
Story Contracting were contracted by BAE Systems to carry out the project which was a mixture of civils and building works to prepare the site for the new University of Cumbria facility.
Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO)
Story Contracting were contracted by Landmarc to carry out the project to construct a new 1214m2 industrial style training building for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) within the Catterick MOD base.
Holmen Iggesund
In 2021 Story were appointed to assist the design team to produce the most efficient construction sequence to carry out the construction of a new Effluent Treatment Plant at the Iggesund factory in Workington, Cumbria.
