BAE Systems Enabling Works

Story Contracting were contracted by BAE Systems to carry out the project which was a mixture of civils and building works to prepare the site for the new University of Cumbria facility.

The Project

Story Contracting were contracted by BAE Systems to carry out the project which was a mixture of civils and building works to prepare the site for the new University of Cumbria facility. The new facility will be located next to the existing BAE Systems Submarine Academy at their site in Barrow-in-Furness.

The Scope

The project involved the following main work activities:

• Pre-start ground investigations and UXO surveys
• Developing and implementing traffic management measures
• Locating and diverting services
• Installing new underground services and connections
• Installing new drainage and altering existing drainage
• Implementing phased segregation on site so that BAE could operate around the works area
• Partially dismantling existing buildings
• Forming new foundations and substructures
• Rebuilding affected sections of remaining buildings
• Removing floor slabs and redundant drainage
• Reprocessing demolition material for reuse
• Installing new security fencing
• Installing new site lighting and associated ductwork
• Forming a new site entrance off the highway
• Extending the carpark, including drainage

Delivering Success

As part of our commitment to being a ’stress-free contractor’ we worked with our design partners Curtains and Kingmoor Consulting, we developed a phased segregation approach for the works package. This allowed the areas of the BAE site around the works area to remain operational, allowing day-to-day works to continue as normal.

The Story Way

Through the project the Story team diligently liaised with stakeholders, effectively planned and delivered works to minimise any client disruption to ensure that client operations remained live in the occupied section of the building whilst the demolition works and gable erection / new cladding were installed. This included:

1. Design and erection of a temporary scaffold fire retardant structure to prevent weather ingress and protect occupants and materials in the occupied section of the structure.

2. Maintained safe through roads to allow the client to access / egress through the CDM site.

3. Continually liaised with stakeholders to phase works around sensitive client operations.

The ground floor of the building was badly impacted by the floods caused by Storm Desmond in December 2015 and had been unused for six years as a result. Extensive refurbishment works were required to repurpose the ground floor which previously housed a large amount of the council’s public-facing operations.
