Milestone reached at Mills Hill

Story Contracting’s Rail Division have recently reached a major milestone in the works at Mills Hill Station in Greater Manchester.

The project team have now opened up the new stepped access to the west of the station, moving the platform access routes to its Rochdale-bound side.

The works come as part of the multi-million-pound ‘Access for All’ (AFA) scheme, a government-funded initiative to improve accessibility for passengers at the station, and which Story Contracting are delivering on behalf of Network Rail.

The new staircase will allow for the construction of a ramp and lift to provide step-free and inclusive access to customers with reduced mobility, families with prams and those carrying heavy luggage.

Jonny Fearon, Contracts Manager in Story’s Rail Division, said: “Many thanks to the team for going the extra mile by ensuring that passengers had a trouble-free change in their access routes to and from the station immediately after the switch.”

This milestone is a significant step forward in the AFA scheme’s path to completion.

The accessibility improvements form part of the wider Great North Rail Project, a rail industry effort to improve train travel and stimulate economic growth in the North of England, set to be completed by 2022.
